Nato a Duisburg (Germania), ha studiato organo presso l’Università della Musica di Vienna con Michael Radulescu e Peter Planyavsky,  direzione d’orchestra con Leopold Hager.
Ha frequentato corsi di perfezionamento con Daniel Roth a Haarlem e Andrew Parrott (pratica dell’esecuzione storica) a Göteborg e con Zubin Mehta e Vaclav Neumann.
Ha tenuto numerosi concerti in Germania, Austria (con l’orchestra sinfonica Radio Vienna, con l’orchestra sinfonica di Vienna sotto la direzione di Georges Prêtre, Roger Norrington, Bruno Weil e David Zinman e nel Festival di Vienna), Italia, Croazia, Svizzera, Danimarca (Festival d’estate di Copenaghen), Francia (Festival “L’ètè musical dans la vallèe du Lot”), Belgio, Paesi Bassi,  Finlandia e Sudafrica.
A novembre 2001 l’esordio concertistico negli USA dove Hartmann ha tenuto un corso di perfezionamento alla Emory-University di Atlanta.
In ottobre 2004 ha eseguito il concerto di inaugurazione al Basically Bach Festival di New York.
Come direttore d’orchestra ha lavorato insieme con  i  Bochumer Symphoniker, il Wiener Kammerorchester, l’ensemble Neue Streicher Wien, il Wiener Konzertchor , i Göttinger Symphoniker e il Concilium Musicum Wien (su strumenti originali).
In veste di direttore d’orchestra e di organista Hartmann ha realizzato numerosi registrazioni radiofoniche, televisive e trasmissioni dal vivo in Austria (ORF), Italia (RAI) e Francia (TV3).
Ha al suo attivo diverse incisioni discografiche, con l’Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (Sony-Classical) e con il Concilium Musicum Wien (Ars Mundi).    
Da 1994 a 2003 Hartmann è stato direttore del coro presso la Chiesa Luterana di Vienna, dove ha fondato coro, orchestra e Camerata Luterana, con i quali ha realizzato l’esecuzione dei grandi oratori e più di novanta registrazioni radiofoniche di opere da Bach a Gielen.
Da 2003 è direttore del coro della cantoria comunale di Bochum in stretta collaborazione con i Bochumer Symphoniker e direttore artistico dei festival “Bochumer Orgeltage” e “Bochumer Bachtage”. 

The German conductor and organist, Arno Hartmann, received his first musical training in piano and organ in his home town Duisburg, as well as afterwards in Düsseldorf. He studied at the University for Music in Vienna with Martin Haselböck, Michael Radulescu and Peter Planyavsky, Erwin Ortner, Günther Theuring and Leopold Hager. He also participated in master-classes with Daniel Roth in Haarlem/Amsterdam and Andrew Parrott (historical performance practice) in Göteborg, as well as with Zubin Mehta and Vaclav Neumann.

From 1989 to 1994 Arno Hartmann was organist and Stadtkantor at the Lutherischen Stadtkirche, Vienna; from 1994 to 2003 Dioezesankantor of the Lutherischen Landeskirche, Vienna. There he created and led choir and orchestras Camerata & Capella Lutherana Wien. In September 2003 he became a full-time Kirchenmusiker (church musician) and Kreiskantor in the Kirchenkreis Bochum and is thereby conductor of the Stadtkantorei Bochum.

Numerous concerts Arno Hartmann to Germany, Austria (concerts with the RSO-Wien, the Wiener Symphonikern - with the conductors George Prêtre, Roger Norrington and Bruno Weil - at the Lockenhauser Kammermusikfest, the Wiener Festwochen, etc.), Italy, Croatia, Switzerland, Denmark (Copenhagen Summer Festival), France (Festival "L'été musical dans la vallée du Lot"), Sweden, Finland and South Africa. In November 2001 he had his concert debut in the USA, where he also led master-class at the Emory University in Atlanta.

As a conductor Arno Hartmann has co-operated with the Göttinger Symphonikern, the Wiener Kammerorchester, the Ensemble Neue Streicher Wien, the Wiener Konzertchor and the Concilium Musicum Wien (on original instruments), among others..

As conductor and organist Arno Hartmann paticipated in numerous broadcast and television programmes and live transmissions in Austria (ORF), Italy (RAI) and France (TV 3). He had CD productions with Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (Sony-Classical), the Concilium Musicum Wien (Ars Mundi), Camerata & Capella Lutherana Wien (Extraplatte).
